Hampton has been chosen as one of 25 U.S. cities to participate in the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities initiative, Mayor Donnie Tuck announced today. The initiative, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, aims to support local sustainability projects and drive economic growth in communities.

"Hampton has worked with Bloomberg Philanthropies through a multitude of the organization’s programs, and each one has proven beneficial to our city,” Mayor Tuck stated. “We are innovative and data-driven in our efforts to reduce damage from flooding, especially in historically underserved communities, and we look forward to participating in the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities initiative to take this work and more to the next level for our residents.”

As part of the initiative, Hampton will receive an innovations team funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, consisting of up to three dedicated staff members with expertise in various fields. The city will also benefit from multi-year, in-depth policy and technical assistance in collaboration with community-based organizations.

Hampton's selection for the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities program was based on its commitment to building resilient and equitable communities. The city has been recognized for its climate adaptation solutions that not only reduce flooding but also improve water quality, enhance wildlife habitats, and promote economic progress, with a particular focus on disadvantaged neighborhoods.

The $200 million Bloomberg Philanthropies initiative seeks to provide support to cities addressing climate change and racial wealth inequity. Hampton's innovative funding approaches to combat the impacts of climate change, such as sea-level rise and extreme weather events, have positioned it as a national leader in sustainability efforts.

Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities is the latest initiative by Bloomberg Philanthropies to promote local climate action in the United States. Previous programs, such as the American Cities Climate Challenge, have supported large U.S. cities in implementing impactful urban climate solutions. Through these initiatives, cities have passed significant policies and launched numerous climate programs, contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions.

Hampton's participation in the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities initiative underscores its ongoing commitment to sustainable development and resilience in the face of climate challenges.
